Santtu-Matias Rouvali enters uncharted territory with the Gothenburg Symphony – Beethoven’s symphonies, this time at Vara Concert Hall.

A beginning that is as obvious as it is suitable: the Haydn-inspired first one, and the – for its time – highly original second symphony, in which Beethoven – with pre-echoes from the ninth – showed who was boss.

So did Leonard Bernstein, who frivolously moved from musicals and jazz to religiously coloured masterpieces and shameless modernism. His Serenade for violin and small orchestra is a moving depiction of Plato’s Symposium (“drinking party”) where good friends and philosophers discuss the true essence of love.

The soloist for this neoclassical gem is celebrated violinist Baiba Skride, who knows the orchestra well from concerts as well as tours.
